CampingGearWise.com is an independent editorial site about camping gear. It is written for people who drive to the site and set up a basecamp: the family with a car full of bins and a reservation for two nights, the couple who want a better night of sleep than the last trip, the parents working out how to handle a toilet and a shower at a site with no facilities. Not expedition climbers counting grams, but campers with a trunk, a picnic table and a long weekend.
We start with the situation rather than the product. How many people actually have to fit in the tent, which measurement decides whether the cot will clear the tent wall, what an R value means when the ground is cold at three in the morning. Once that is clear, the gear question usually answers itself, and quite often the honest answer is that no purchase is needed at all.
We are an editorial team, not a guide service
We are writers and researchers who camp, not outdoor instructors, guides or certified technicians. Nothing here is an installation manual, a safety course or a substitute for the instructions that came with your equipment. We describe what gear is designed to do and what campers commonly run into, and we never claim that an item makes a camp safe.
Anything that burns fuel or carries current deserves more care than an article can give it. Follow the maker instructions for clearance and ventilation, keep combustion outside the tent unless the manufacturer publishes a rating for enclosed use, and get qualified help for wiring or repairs rather than improvising at the site.
How we work
We do not run a test camp and we do not physically test the gear we write about, and we do not pretend otherwise. Our guides are built on published manufacturer specifications, on official guidance where it exists, and on what campers consistently report after a season or two of real use. Safety details such as a clearance distance, a weight capacity or a standards reference are repeated only as the manufacturer states them, never invented or assumed.
We favor gear that suits the trip you actually take, because the lightest option is rarely the right one when you are parked ten steps from the tent. We also keep prices out of the written guides, since they change constantly and the current one is always on the retailer page. Fire restrictions, generator hours and what may be left out overnight vary by site and by season, so we explain the general picture and point to the land manager and to Leave No Trace rather than telling you what your campground allows.
